Signs that say what is not allowed
Prohibition signs show an action that is banned in an area. The standard format is a red circle with a diagonal bar over a black symbol on a white background. Because the red ring and bar are so recognisable, people understand the message quickly.
Examples in this category
No smoking, and no naked flames.
No entry, and no unauthorised access.
No pedestrians, or no forklifts.
No mobile phones.
Do not touch, do not switch on, do not use this lift in a fire.
No drinking water, or no food and drink.
Where they help most
Fuel and gas stores, workshops with flammable materials, electrical rooms, laboratories, warehouses with mixed pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and any controlled area. Prohibition signs are often paired with a hazard sign that explains why.
How to choose
Be specific
A sign that matches the exact ban is easier to follow than a long text notice. If your rule is not on the standard list, we can make it as a custom sign.
Material and durability
Vinyl stickers fit doors, glass and machines. Add laminate where cleaning or contact is frequent. Outdoors or on rough surfaces, ABS plastic and Chromadek steel are better choices. Photoluminescent versions help in dark areas.
Size and position
Place the sign where people can see it before they act, for instance at the door of the area rather than inside. Bigger faces suit entrances and fences; small ones suit equipment.
Check your rules
Your site may have legal or insurer requirements for specific signs. Confirm with your health and safety officer.
